What He Does
The work of Pipefitters consist of the following: the laying out of work by using building plans and specifications for the construction and installation of piping systems, supports, pre-fabricated items, assembly of equipment and appurtenances both new and existing, and maintenance of these systems and equipment. Systems may include stream, condensate, water, drain lines, oily gas, chemical, hydraulic, lubrication, heating, refrigeration, and process piping systems.

Working Conditions
Pipefitters' work may be found in industrial plants, chemical plants, refineries power plants, waste water treatment plants, hospitals, and most other commercial, industrial, institutional and residential buildings.

About the Program

Apprentices earn while they learn, working on the job with Journeymen.  In addition, they attend classes or related technical instruction.  The objective of the instruction, in addition to on the job experience, is to train all-around journeymen.  All apprentices are required to attend classes of related technical instruction and manipulative instruction. Apprentices will attend classes two (2) nights a week for five (5) years. Classes are conducted during the work week from 6:45p.m. to 9:45p.m. with a fifteen minute break.

Wages

Apprentices earn a percentage of an established Journeyman wage rate, by classification. Currently, Journeyman wage is $ and the beginning apprentice wage is $ . All wage rates and conditions are subject to change without notice as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Wage advances are possible once a year during the apprenticeship term. The advancements are set by the Local Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (J.A.T.C.) that is locally established to supervise the apprentices training, providing, however, the programs advancement requirements are met.

Hours of Work

Usually, 7:00a.m. to 3:30p.m. with 1/2 hour for lunch, or as otherwise modified by union agreement. The work week is forty (40) hours, or as otherwise modified by union agreement.

Tools and Transportation

Apprentices are required to furnish their own reliable transportation. Tools are normally supplied by the contractors, but the minimum requirement is a good tape measure and a pair of channel locks. There is now a tool allowance and tool list in the current wages.

Union Affiliation

Apprentices are obligated to make application to the Union at the time of their apprenticeship and must maintain their availability for employment referral. Apprentices serve a probationary period for the first year of their apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship Agreement

Each apprentice will sign an apprenticeship agreement with the Local Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. Each apprentice must agree to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee and the Training Standards. This agreement is registered with the State of Florida, Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprenticeship
Standards.
